South Nottinghamshire CCGs lead on cervical screenings

Millions of women are not having their cervical smear test during the recommended time frame for their age. However, women living in the South Nottinghamshire CCG areas are bucking the trend and feature in the top five areas in the country for women having their screenings.

Rushcliffe CCG was at the top of the list with more than 81% of women having their cervical smear test within the recommended time, which is every three years for women aged 25 to 49 and every five years for women between 50 and 64. Nottingham West and Nottingham North and East both had more than 78% uptake.

Rachael Rees, Head of Primary Care, Nottingham North and East CCG says:

“Across the South Nottinghamshire CCGs – NHS Nottingham North and East, Nottingham West and Rushcliffe – cervical screening take up is monitored on our Primary Care Quality Dashboard.

“The dashboard helps us identify practices that are not achieving the National targets for cervical screening. These practices will then get extra support from the CCG Quality and Primary Care teams to encourage women to come forward for their tests.

“We have also been working with Cancer Research UK, who have been visiting our practices and supporting them to increase their uptake. Sometimes, the most simple suggestions are the things that work, like changing the colour of the letter paper or telephoning the patient to remind them. We are working with the charity to develop top 10 tips for all Practices in Greater Nottingham to support them to try all approaches to increase uptake of this important.”

The cervical smear test detects abnormal cells on the entrance to the womb that could potentially develop into cervical cancer. It’s estimated at least 2,000 cases of cervical cancer are prevented each year in the UK because of cervical screening.

If you’re due your screening, contact your GP surgery to arrange an appointment.
