Changes to gluten free prescribing (outcome of 2016 consultation)

gluten-freeFollowing a three month consultation period, the NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups for Nottingham North and East, Nottingham West and Rushcliffe are changing their policy in relation to the availability of gluten-free food on prescription.

We received over a thousand responses to our consultation and would like to thank everyone who took the time to share their views.

The results of the consultation have been considered within the proposed options and the following decision has been made by the clinical cabinet:

  • Four units in total of long life bread and/or flour each month on prescription for patients with a diagnosed condition of coeliac disease or dermatitis herpetiformis.

As of 1 May 2016, FOUR units maximum of long life bread and flour will continue to remain available on prescription for patients with a diagnosed condition of coeliac disease or dermatitis herpetiformis.

Affected patients will receive a letter to inform them of the changes to their prescriptions.

Dr Guy Mansford, Clinical Lead for Nottingham West Clinical Commissioning Group, said:
“The decision to make changes to the policy for gluten-free prescribing came after a wide-ranging discussion involving clinicians, stakeholders and the public, and we considered a number of options, including stopping gluten-free prescriptions entirely.

“Our decision was to reduce the amount of gluten free food on prescription.

“As demand for NHS services continues to increase, we need to re-examine the services we offer and see if they continue to be valid. Thirty years ago when the gluten free prescriptions started, it was extremely difficult for coeliac disease sufferers to find gluten-free products. These days you can find an extensive range in almost every supermarket. There are also lots of alternative foods which are naturally gluten-free.

“However, we listened to the views put forward during the consultation and recognise that some gluten-free products can be more expensive, which is why we have, at this time, elected to maintain four units of long-life bread and flour.

“If patients are unsure of what they can or can’t eat and they want advice on how best to manage their condition, they should speak to their GP.”
